Step of Faith

Have you noticed how God calls us to do things without giving us the whole picture?

And have you noticed how He doesn't wait until WE think we are ready before He calls us to go?

Hence, "walk by faith, not by sight".

The thing about faith is that you don't have to have all the pieces put together before you move. When you have faith, you begin a journey without knowing exactly where you will end up.

Like Abraham for instance.

"The LORD had said to Abram, 'Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.'" Gen 12:1

Did you catch that?

Go to the land that I WILL show you.

It takes faith to GO without knowing exactly WHERE you are going.

When God called us to start The Suubi Project in Ug*nda, He didn't give us the whole picture. And I definitely did NOT (do not) feel equipped to do what He has asked of me!

The Suubi journey has felt like a scene right out of an Indiana Jones movie. You know the one... where Indiana has to take the first step BEFORE the stone bridge appears! The step of faith!

Every step of this journey has felt like that! Do the first thing... then the next... then the next... and so on.

I have yet to feel "ready" for what God is doing through this project. I feel inadequate most days to do this job.

I am so very thankful for His promise of "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."

When it comes to overseeing an orphanage, finding sponsors for school fees, providing for a church, figuring out ways to minister to a village, putting a website together, doing interviews to hopefully gain more interest in what God is doing... wow! He could have picked someone with a LOT MORE knowledge and ability than I possess!

But OH! how thankful I am that He has let me be a part of all that HE is doing through Suubi! It's so exciting to be in the middle of it!

I encourage you... if you feel God is calling you to do something AND it lines up with Scripture... like care for orphans, adopt a child, take care of a widow, give to the poor, start a ministry...... I encourage you to take the first step.

Be faithful in the first step. He will show you where to go next.

He will provide what you need and He will direct your path. He will close doors... and He will open them.

He is indeed FAITHFUL!

Next month the Living Magazine of the DFW Area is publishing an article on The Suubi Project. Needless to say, we are a little excited about it!

So... ready or not... God is moving!

My prayer is... that what ever He asks of me and you, we will be faithful to walk in faith one step at a time, doing all that He directs us to do.

"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.' Isaiah 30:21

Today we celebrate the life of our precious Katherine.

She is our beautiful daughter that has brought joy into our home
since the day she was born.

All her life she has been a happy girl.

Katherine has loved Jesus since she was very young.

Now as a young woman, she has dedicated her life to following Him
in passionate pursuit of what ever He wants her to do
and where ever He wants her to go.

Yes. is her answer to His call.

We are so very proud of her.

One year ago, today is also the day that my stepDad died.

A loss that is still difficult to believe.

His death left me with the sad realization
that I hadn't said all the things I wanted to say...

and I wonder if he knew just how much he meant to me.

The heart break of losing him was magnified
by watching my mother grieve the loss of her husband...
her very best friend.

My heart aches for her still.

On this day that is so very special...

and so very sad...

I will celebrate life.

Because after death...

there is new life for those that know and love Jesus.

My Dad loved Jesus.

So LIFE everlasting is his.

I wish my precious, beautiful Katherine a very happy Birthday!

and my Dad... I hold on to the hope that promises
I will see him again someday.

instead of being too busy with life and wrapped up in our own plans...

when we say "Here I am, Lord! Send me!"

He WILL use us.

I am amazed that God has allowed our family to be a part of what He is doing in Ug*nda.

I am humbled by all that He is accomplishing through us.

It is a beautiful thing to be in the middle of what God is doing.

Wedding Day!

In a beautiful ceremony

inside a quaint little chapel

nestled in the hills of Kentucky...

our oldest son stood before God,

said his vows

and became husband.

There was such joy in witnessing

the happiness and love he and his bride share!

We are so happy to have Lauren join our family!

It was so wonderful to have ALL 10 (now 11!)

of our children in the same place!

Brandon is missing from this photo because

he was busy taking wedding portraits.

Much more important at the moment!

As Brandon and Lauren said their vows,

it made me smile at the thought of

Gary and I over 20 years ago

making that same commitment.

I am so blessed to be married

to this wonderful man.

We've come a long way, Baby!

One Year Ago

since Juliet and Kenneth came home!

It some ways it doesn't seem like it could be that long ago...

but in most ways it feels like they have been with us forever!

They fit so perfectly into our family!

(So HAPPY that Sharon is finally home too!)

Ireland

To celebrate Kat's 18th birthday AND high school graduation...

I took my beautiful girl on a trip to BEAUTIFUL Ireland!

First stop... The Cliffs of Moher.

The cliffs declare the beauty and majesty of the Lord!

The first place we stayed was Delphi Lodge.

Delphi is a quaint fishing lodge,

but non-fisherman find it just as appealing.

By far, one of our favorite places...

and if I ever have the opportunity to visit Ireland again...

I will definitely be returning to Delphi Lodge!

There are beautiful ruins all over the country side...

With SO MUCH incredible history.

We visited Blarney Castle...

and the Rock of Cashel and cemetery.

The Rock of Cashel was the place where St. Patrick introduced

Christianity to Ireland. It is an incredible story!

Mount Juliet was another LOVELY estate home that we stayed in...

with incredible countryside...

and roads that required long, quiet strolls.

Moving on... we visited the Powerscourt Gardens.

They were the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen.

and Powerscourt Waterfall was incredible too.

Then there was the quaint little village of Kenmare...

where the streets are lined with shops and restaurants

all inviting you to come in and stay awhile.

Kat and I stopped in O'Donnabhain's for some delicious fish and chips

and live Irish music. It was so very Ireland!

From there we went to Ashford Castle.

It was a grand place and holds some dear memories...

We went horseback riding...

walked around the gorgeous grounds taking pictures... and

A favorite memory is the Scottish/English couple we met

who adopted a precious little girl from Ghana.

Love that!

The landscape in Ireland is breath taking...

with street scenes right out of the movies.

It's a lovely place...

just lovely.

This trip was such a precious time for me and my girl.

We traveled all the way around this beautiful country...

taking pictures... and enjoying every moment.

We met some amazing people that we will never forget...

and made memories that will keep us laughing for years!

It was truly... lovely.

I'm BACK!

Are you still there?!! It's been awhile since I've checked in!

Since I arrived home JUST four weeks ago, life has been CRAZY busy! But... AMAZING!

I hit the ground running when I got back and Sharon has had to run right along with me! She has handled everything beautifully! Even though sometimes I catch her staring at me like a deer in headlights!

The day after I got home, Kat and her friend, Emma, had a garage sale to raise money for mission trips...

Followed by our annual dance recital dress rehearsal (on Monday) and performance (on Tuesday)...

Then we had piano recital on Thursday...

Our school's annual "Classics Festival" on Saturday...

followed that night by a friend's graduation! That was week ONE!

My second week home...

I spent the first couple of days running around like a mad women getting everything needed for Kat's graduation ceremony...

Thank you, Minda, for the amazing Cake Pops!

On Wednesday, my precious Mom came into town...

Then the last day of school and "Moving Up Ceremony" was on Thursday...

followed by Graduation on Friday...

Oh. My. Goodness!

But... as crazy busy as it has been... I am so HAPPY and BLESSED to be home!

I am learning to be in the moment... to not take where I am right this minute for granted. I'm learning to enjoy this moment and not rush ahead to the next one before it's time. I am also learning that life isn't an emergency... it's a journey. And to be completely in the moment is the best way to enjoy the journey.

I hope that in the midst of the craziness of life... you will be able to enjoy and appreciate...

Pray for Peace

We shouldn't take peace for granted. But... we do.

Because I live in a country where peace is the "normal"... the reality... it's difficult for me to grasp being in a place where peace is not an absolute. Every day is another day for peace to be disrupted.

Riots have been breaking out all over K@mpala for the past several weeks. The reason for the protests, which have become riots, are being blamed on the risnig cost of fuel and food. Now... I am not opposed to people "demonstrating" or "protesting" something that they disagree with, but the violence is the issue here.

The problem is that the man responsible for the protests has publicly admitted he will not accept the president's new term. He has started a campaign to protest rising fuel and food costs, but some believe his real "protest" is against the president.

These protests have turned violent.  The protestors are blocking roads, starting fires, throwing rocks at people that are not joining their efforts, and needlessly causing chaos in the city. Yet, they blame the police for the violence. The police have become involved... to keep the peace.

It seems that the man opposing the president's new term is determined to continue with his protests, even if the people he claims to care about are being hurt... and even killed.

I don't pretend to know all the ends and outs of this situation. But what I do know is that peace is fragile here... and innocent people are dying.

Please pray for this situation. Pray for this city. Pray for this country. Pray for this continent.

And honestly, what truly breaks my heart is... how much would I care if I were not here in the midst of it? Would I think about the individuals being hurt, or the children being killed here, if I weren't witnessing it first hand? How easily do I dismiss events around the world because I am not personally effected?

My plans were disrupted today and for a little while the consistent sounds of gunfire was unsettling.  But, I don't live the reality of what is happening to the people here. I will go home eventually and leave this behind.

The challenge is... keeping our hearts engaged when the chaos and pain are far away from us.  Because when our hearts are engaged... and something truly matters to us... we pray.   And prayer... changes things.

His Will

As I sat in the judge's chambers today... the peace of God that surpasses all understanding covered me.

It was beautiful... amazing, really.

I sat there totally surrendered to God's will... just trusting Him.

Isn't surrendered... completely... the place where we are supposed to live our lives... always?

As I sat there listening to the judge talk to my lawyers, my thought was... 'God, I want whatever You want... because YOU know best'.

Of course! I want Sharon to come home with me.

But, I realized at that moment that I finally wanted what He wants... more.

He loves my girl infinitely more than I do.

He knows her future...

and He has plans to prosper her... to give her hope and a future.

What does one minute of worry... or anxiety bring? Nothing.

He alone brings perfect peace.

Beautiful peace.

The judge will give us his ruling on Monday.

Until then, I hope you will continue praying...

for His perfect will to be done... ALL for His glory!

A New Day

Sharon and I watched a movie recently that had a simple, yet profound, statement in it... "Today, is a new day".

Every day she repeats it.

I realized today that she understands the truth in the statement... the weight of it.

When she says it, she drags "new" out... for effect.

Well... tomorrow is another new day.

It's a new court day for us.

God alone can bring our girl home...

I am trusting Him.

We covet your prayers...

"I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere Him." Eccl 3:14

Sharing My Heart

Since my first visit to Ug@nda several years ago, I have wanted to bring my sister-in-law, my friend, Annette here. I have longed to share this country and all that I have experienced here with her. I have wanted to watch her experience all the sights and sounds and smells... I have dreamed of her coming to meet the people here that mean so much to me.

A couple of weeks ago it finally happened! She got on a plane and traveled with me to this country that has captured my heart. Oh! what happiness I felt to finally be able to share my heart for this place with her!

It was pure joy to watch her experience everything that I have tried to put into words, but failed to do accurately. I love that now that she has been here... she gets it.

I could not wait to take her out to SUUBI and show her all that the Lord has done! To share this piece of my heart with her, that has transformed from a dream into reality, was an amazing moment!

Although I have tried many times... how can you truly explain how being in a place changes your heart? I have wanted her to understand the way I feel about this place... but I have yet to find words that accurately describes all that it is to me. "There are no words" is an overused expression... ONLY if you have never experienced what makes the expression true! "There are no words" is exactly why I have longed to bring her here! I wanted her to feel this place... to experience it.

What a blessing! to introduce her to the people here that have become family to me... to take her to the places that have changed the way I view life... to listen to her share her heart about what she experienced here and know that the Lord is working out something new... something beautiful!

The Lord knew I needed her to make this trip with me. And He knew she needed to experience this place. It was so wonderful to have my friend... my sister (we dropped the in-law part this trip:) come and fall in love with this place that has captured my heart! JOY!

What a blessing to be able to share my heart and words and concerns and struggles and dreams with this precious friend!

I am filled with joy... and so very thankful to have had these few weeks to share my heart for this place with my Nette. God is indeed good... ALL the time. In the big things and in the little things... He is worthy of praise!

Still Here

I am still here in Ug@nda... waiting for a miracle.

My sister-in-law made the trip with me this time. It was a last minute MIRACLE that she was able to join me... and oh! what a blessing! We dropped the in-law part while she was here. I like having a sister.

She left last night to go back home and I am left hanging onto the blessing it was to have her here.

Today has been more emotional... for many reasons.

It's my first day to spend without my sister and there has not been enough to do! I enjoyed these "slow days" while Nette was here... but today, not so much.

I also talked to my children at home which added to the emotion of the day. They were on their way to school so I took the opportunity to chat with each one. Oh! how I miss them! I love hearing about the details of what's going on in their lives... but it makes my heart ache that I am not there to share in it.

I AM trusting the Lord with this whole situation... but I will admit the thought of leaving my girl one more time overwhelms me. Yesterday she asked me about going to the airport and I assumed she was talking about taking Annette there. I was mistaken. She immediately starting crying and I was confused for a minute... she thought I was leaving too. Thankfully I realized our miscommunication quickly and was able to comfort her... my poor girl.

Praying for miracle... and that it happens before next Friday...

until then... I'm still here.

I don't know 'why' we still don't have Sharon home with us.

Moving Forward

I have a sweet friend that is always so encouraging to see any advance as "moving forward". I love her heart. I love the way she views things!

This time next week I will be on a plane headed to U.ganda. Excited does not even cover how I am feeling! "Moving forward" is the theme of this trip!

We will be working on The Suubi Project... overseeing the completion of our children's home and getting ready to bring some precious children home to it! That is a HUGE step forward. Not to mention how absolutely amazing it is to see the "vision" come to life!

Just as exciting, if not more so, is the possibility of moving forward in bringing Sharon home. My heart breaks for my precious girl. Her smile has faded. Her laughter has become seldom. She misses me. She misses her brother and sister. And she is sad. Her heart aches for what she thought would be... for what she hoped and prayed for... for years.

Please... pray for my girl. Pray that we WILL move forward... and bring her home!

Pray for Suubi... that God is glorified through every step! After all... it is ALL for His GLORY!!!

Chris Medina on American Idol

Wow... what an inspiration...

Chris Medina, a young man with an inspiring story who displays incredible character.

The 26-year old barista from Illinois appeared on Wednesday's tryout episode of the national singing competition, and brought his girlfriend, Julia Ramos. She was there for a different kind of inspiration: two weeks before they were to marry, Ramos was in a car accident, leaving her with brain damage. Now, Chris Medina is his fiance's caretaker. Julia is still heavily disabled and confined to a wheel chair.

I was struck deeply with something he said, "I was about to make vows just two months before the accident. Through thick and thin, till death do us part, in sickness and in health, for better or for worse. What kind of guy would I be if I walked out when she needed me the most?"

Character. Commitment. Staying true to your word. That's something our world needs to see. Thanks for showing the world what it looks like Chris.

This was Kenneth's first birthday party... he turned 13.

He was so excited about his party!

Oh, how thankful I am that we spent Christmas Eve together! Had I known it would be the last time I would ever see you... what would I have said to you?

I would have said "thank you"...

Thank you for the service you rendered to our country as you served in the Air Force EOD for so many years. Thank you for risking your life for the sake of securing our freedom.

Thank you for raising your son to be the hard working, honest, loving, God-fearing man that he is today. I know how proud you were of him.

Thank you for loving me. Your tough guy image never fooled me... and you knew it. And although the words were not spoken, I know you loved me.

Thank you for loving your grand-children. They will forever remember the times we sat around the dinner table laughing hysterically, until everybody's sides ached and tears rolled down cheeks, from the silly antics of their Papaw.

Some said you were stubborn... I just thought you were fiesty. I liked it.

You were a remarkable man, Stan. I am thankful to have known you. I am thankful that some day... I will see you again.

Be FILLED with the Truth

I have been struggling for several days... okay, maybe a week.

The thoughts that consume me lately are lies. But, still. I have been listening. Believing.

The short version is that the busyness of this season... combined with concern for my girl, Juliet, who has some mysterious issue (that has kept her home from school for over a week now) that the doctor has yet to resolve... added to the fact that I haven't felt great in over two weeks... multiplied by a mile long list of things I am supposed to be taking care of (instead of blogging!)... plus Suubi Project is taking off... ... together has left me struggling in many areas.

Today, I realized... that in the midst of the busyness and other distractions... I have been neglecting what's most important because He doesn't demand my attention.

The result of that neglect is that my 'cup' has not been re-filled.

And when my cup is empty... I forget who I am... and the lies become believable.

I am so thankful for His grace.

Today, I ran to my heavenly Father's throne... and there He was... waiting for me.

The Ruler of the universe waiting in the fullness of Love to speak to my heart.

What peace... and joy... and filling up we can receive when we simply approach His throne! When we seek Him, we will find Him.

Oh! Why do I neglect the Source of Life and Truth and Love???

Lies.

Today I remembered Who I belong to... and who I am. I am His. And the truth is this...

Each one, that confesses Jesus as Savior, belongs to God.

In Him you will know the truth... and the Truth will set you free.

Thank you, Father, for lovingly reminding me, again, of who I am.

Dear Friends... The Lord Almighty waits for you... He calls you by name... Listen... and be filled with the Truth.

The Truth

A Letter to Daddy

Dear Daddy,

I know you are in a better place because I know you love Jesus... but I miss you terribly. I will forever miss your voice in the background as I talk to Mom on the phone yelling, "Hi Hon... I love you". I will forever miss your bear hugs. I will forever miss the way your smile would light up a room and the way you would make the smallest of gifts seem like the grandest thing you had ever received. I will forever miss your stubborn ways and the way you would ask me to, "Come over here and let me show you something".

Thank you for making Momma so happy and for taking such good care of her. Thank you for loving me as your own. Thank you for loving my children, for spoiling them, and for teaching them so many things. I know you were so proud of them and that meant the world to me.

It blesses my heart to witness so many people who were touched by you in one way or another. You brought much happiness into many lives. So many people miss you... especially Momma. You were a wonderful man, Daddy, and I am so proud to be your daughter.

Remembering Daddy

My step-father, as most children might refer to a mother's second husband, recently passed away. But he was so much more than a step-father.... he was my Dad.

He loved me as his own daughter. He never thought of me or treated me as a "step" child... only his child. He called me his "beautiful, wonderful, amazing, daughter". He was proud of me and he told me often. He celebrated me, encouraged me, adored me. He loved me unconditionally... beautifully.

My favorite thing about Daddy was how happy he made my Mom. He loved and adored her. I loved watching them google over each other when I was younger and as I got older it was very entertaining to watch them pester each other... always with love. They had a lot of fun together... it kept them young.

He was also a wonderful "Papaw" to all his grandchildren. He loved his grandchildren like nobody's business. He adored them. He spoiled them like nobody's business too! He couldn't help himself. He loved teaching them new things and sharing new experiences with them... and giving them treats right before dinner.

Daddy loved collecting Coke-a-Cola memorabilia and Elvis was his favorite. He loved a good western movie and playing games with his grandkids. He loved bringing people together, which is the reason he started "The 82nd Combat Engineer" website, as well as a website for his hometown's highschool. He loved having coffee and chatting with friends. If you ever stopped by his house to drop something off, you had better plan on staying awhile because he always had a story to share.

Daddy had a passion for people. He could talk to anyone... and he made everyone feel like someone special. It was his gift. He will be greatly missed.

Saying goodbye is too hard... so I'll just say... "I'll be seeing you, Daddy."

This past Sunday, our Pastor spoke about how the love of Christ compels us. His love compels us to DO something, to act, to serve, to LOVE. He was explaining how when the love of Christ compels you to do something, you just have to "get it out"!

I must say... I TOTALLY get that!

My mind is consumed with The Suubi Project! I am so excited about what God is doing and I am SO BLESSED that He would use me in this project!

I am compelled by the love of Christ!

Learning

It is such a joy to watch Juliet and Kenneth learn different things about living here. It makes me laugh to hear them figuring out things and then interpreting to one another their opinions on a matter.

For example...

After explaining to Juliet and Kenneth that we needed to "hurry" at the store, so that we wouldn't be late picking up their siblings...

Juliet looks back at Kenneth and says, "Walk like an American, not a Ugandan."

She got that one right!

In the Quiet

As I was standing at my kitchen sink washing dishes this past week, watching Juliet and Kenneth work on their math lessons, I could only smile and give thanks to God.

It was a two year journey to get them home. So.Worth.It.

For nearly two years, before we met them, I had been seeking God's direction for my life. We had finished building our home. After home schooling for 15 plus years, we had enrolled our youngest four children in a small private school. All of a sudden, the house was quiet... and still. I missed being with my children all day and considered bringing them back home numerous times. But we believed, without a doubt, that they were where they were supposed to be to complete their education. But, now what was I going to do?

A hunger grew in me to serve God in a new way... a burning desire that left me standing at my kitchen sink crying out to Him daily for direction. I did NOT want my life to be about a tidy house and clean laundry. I know now... that the house needed to be quiet... so that I could hear Him.

The Lord had planted the seed for Ug*nda and orphans in my heart through different people many years ago. It was during the quiet years that He spoke to my heart and prepared our family, not only for adoption, but for a bigger project. His hand guided us down the road to adoption and it is His hand alone that brought these children home.

He is faithful.

Now as I stand at my kitchen sink and watch my children begin their new life, I can only praise Him. He has brought them here. He is faithful. Always.

If you are seeking His direction... be still and listen. It is in the quiet that you will hear Him. He will answer you. He will show you the way. And whatever obstacles lie ahead, He will bring His good plan to completion. He will.

"...asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way..." Col. 1:9-10

First Week

Trusting in His Plan

Many times, during the journey to bring these children home, I have had an idea of how I think things should go.

Not one time have things lined up with my plan. But God's plan has always been better. Not easier, but better.

I will not be able to bring Sharon home with me right now. As difficult as it has been to accept that reality... I trust that His plan is better.

In the midst of a storm it is difficult to see clearly, but when the clouds part and the sun shines... the rainbow appears... reminding us that He ALWAYS keeps His promises.

I know that He will work out Sharon's situation according to His good and perfect will.

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

In Need of a Miracle

Guardianship has been granted for all three children... BUT.

The judge granted us guardianship of our youngest girl, but wrote that he will not allow her to "immigrate" to the US, along with her brother and sister, because she is "too young to be seperated from her mother".

The whole thing is ridiculous. She has been "seperated from her mother" for nearly two years because her mother can not take care of her.

No one that I have talked to has ever heard of such a ruling.

We are in need of a miracle...

I know that God will provide a way... if it is His will for this precious girl to come home with me.

We need a miracle...

Only He can accomplish it... only Him.

Celebrating a Victory

Remember

"Remember this moment," was what Mindy whispered to me while we were waiting for the judge to enter the court. "Remember this is the moment we have been fighting for for so long."

There were moments during the hearing that I questioned myself. Am I doing the right thing? Is there a better way? Do these children really understand? The judge made some comments that had me asking myself, "Am I being selfish?" "Would they be better off staying here with their mother?"

When I found out they had a mother, it knocked me to my knees. I had believed they were full orphans for so long that I had a really hard time processing that truth. It took me several days of crying out to the Lord, asking Him, "What am I supposed to do?!" before I remembered (again!) that this was God's plan. He brought us to this place. He showed us these children. He spoke to our hearts. This was His plan!

Through every trial, every disappointment, every discouragment, every sad day, every anxious day, every frustrating day... God has been working. He has a beautiful, perfect, marvelous plan for these children and for my family. I can not see it clearly... but I trust Him and I will remember His faithfulness.

As I sat in court, listening to this judge that has the authority to keep these children from coming home with me... I could only pray. God has a plan and whatever the outcome is, it will be His doing.

Now... we wait for a ruling. It was supposed to come on Friday... but the judge wants to see the children's uncle. My friend has had to travel very far and search for him, since he has no phone. There was some concern that he wouldn't be found. Praise God! he is now here in the city and ready to appear in court on Monday.

When I enter the court on Monday, I will remember the One who has brought us here... and that He will finish what He has started.

"Glory in His holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. Look to the LORD and His strength; seek His face always. Remember the wonders He has done, His miracles, and the judgments He pronounced."
1 Chron. 16: 10-12

Do You Trust?

On Sunday, we visited a church in a small village where my friend preaches. The message was about how many people have faith in God, but so many do not trust Him.

He used the example of a child trusting his parent to provide for him. The child does not go to a neighbor, or a friend, or anyone else to get what he needs. The child goes to his parent, trusting that his needs will be met. If the child were to ask a guest visiting the family to meet his needs, the parent would be "annoyed" that the child was asking their guest. The parent wants the child to make his requests known only to him, so that he can meet his child's needs. So often, the child does not even need to ask because the parent already knows what the child needs and he is happy to provide for his child.

How much more so is this true with our heavenly Father?!

How often do we trust in man? How often do we turn to our friends in search of answers? How many times do we rely on our own abilities instead of asking our Father for His good provision? How often do we "annoy" our Father because we look for answers and provisions from everywhere else before we turn to Him?

We say we have faith in Him, but are we trusting Him?

Are we trusting Him to complete whatever He has begun? Are we trusting Him to finish what He has started? Are we trusting Him to work out His good plan for us?

Or... Do we get impatient when we face delays? Do we grumble when the outcome is not what we desired? Do we fear man because he holds a position of power? If so, why?

The only answer is that we are not trusting our Father completely.

This morning before court, Juliet, Kenneth, Sharon and I gathered for prayer.

Kenneth was the first to pray. He began by thanking God for a new day, a good night's sleep, food to eat, and every other thing that most of us in the US would skip over merely because we take so much for granted. He then began praying for our court appointment. He prayed, "We are only human beings, O God. But You are Lord of all and King of kings. We are unable to make a good outcome in court, O God, but with You all things are possible. We ask that You will finish what You have started, O God. We pray, O God, that You will bring to completion that which You have begun." Amen!

I was so moved by his faith. He completely trusts God to work out His good plan.

O God, forgive me for not trusting You completely. Forgive me for relying on my own strength. Forgive me for complaining and for being impatient. Forgive me for fearing that man could oppose Your good purpose and plan. Thank you for working in me, as you work out what You desire. You are so good! You are faithful! I will TRUST You! In Jesus name... Amen!

When we returned from court, Kenneth turned to me and said, "Mummy, our prayers have not gone unanswered." Praise God... to Him alone be the glory!

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5

This Place

The sights and sounds and smells of this place come fast and furious once I arrive here...

no words or pictures can capture it.... not fully.

Joy rises up as we land here... even more so when we head towards the city.

This place... It's overwhelming... and tragic... and beautiful... and in the most desperate situations, hope rises up.

I am so thankful for this journey the Lord has brought me on.... this plan that He has allowed me to be a part of in such a beautiful way.

I don't know what this journey holds... but I know that He has a good plan.

A New Day

I took my eyes off Jesus yesterday. I was so focused on my own desires and plans, I took my eyes off Him and became frustrated and irritated by the circumstances surrounding me.

He has had His hand on every step of this amazing, almost two year, journey. Do I so easily forget how much He has accomplished?

Before our first trip to Uganda, we prayed fervently that we would be faithful to His plan for us. I asked Him to show us the children He wanted us to adopt while we were there. Do I forget His faithfulness so easily?

On that first trip, when everything around us was new and heartbreaking and overwhelming in so many ways, but also beautiful, He opened our eyes to a bigger purpose and broke our hearts for the orphans and widows there. For that, I am forever grateful.

On that same trip to the "Pearl of Africa", He showed us our children. It was a beautiful, wonderful, perfect moment. Each one of us knew the moment we saw them that they were to be a part of our family. We felt it in our hearts. Why do I forget that He will work out all things according to His will and His perfect timing?

He also brought Daniel into our lives on that trip. Daniel, who we now call son and will forever be joined as family. This young man that speaks truth into my heart and shows me how to truly walk in faith.

I have been led to return on several occasions without a complete understanding of the purpose for each trip. It was only once I was in country that the reason was revealed. Oh! how faithful our God is! He has protected our children from being forever lost to us, He has revealed the truth when we were being deceived, He has taken the desire of our hearts and allowed us to be a bigger part of His plan in caring for the orphans in a real and tangible way. How easily I become distracted by the obstacles in front of me and forget that He is the One who moves mountains!

"Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done. the things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare." Psalm 40:5

This morning I received a precious, encouraging e-mail from my Daniel. He spoke of courage and God's plan, reminding me that His plan is perfect and in His perfect timing He would make it happen. Oh, how this young man blesses my heart!

As I read in Isaiah this morning, God spoke... "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."

Jesus, forgive me for focusing on the obstacles instead of You. Forgive me for wanting my own way, instead of faithfully waiting on Your purposes to be accomplished. I completely surrender to You and trust in You, believing You will accomplish what you have set out to do. Thank You for loving me and for all that You are doing. Two Steps...

forward. One step back.

This whole adoption process is one long, crazy, emotional roller coaster ride.

Most days I try and be positive about the whole thing... cause I know that God is in control. He is working out His good plan and I trust Him.

But today, I'm ticked off.

I don't like it when I get told something, expecting to move forward, only to be told a WEEK later that there is this one more thing that needs to be done.

It irritates me. It frustrates me. It makes me crazy.

Just so you know... THAT is where I am today.

Summer Lovin'

Three

This morning at church I noticed that there were three empty seats on the end of our row.

I realized that our family took up every seat... except for three.

Three.

Three empty seats meant for the three waiting.

Three waiting to come home to us and sit in those seats.

It was one of those moments.

Please, Lord, bring them home now.

Celebrating Life

The Magic Time Machine is a treat for our family.

We only go on special occasions.

The hostess asked us what "occasion" we were celebrating.

We told her... LIFE!

Isn't life worth celebrating?!

Brandon and his girlfriend, Lauren, came for a visit...

and THAT is definitely worth celebrating!

We laughed...

and acted all goofy!

We drank weird drinks...

and had a balloon monkey

made right at our table. So cute!

The Magician was a big hit!

Pick a card... Any card...

Kat was pleased with her choice.

He had her write her name on it.

After he asked her to put it back in the stack,

he did some cool tricks with it, including catching it on fire!

Then... he pulled out her card! FUN!

The most amazing act was the disappearing act!

I sat and watched as this...

disappeared in one minute 20 seconds. Gary timed it.

It was pretty amazing!

As you can tell by the look on Kat's face!

I Don't Know vs I Know

I don't know why our adoption is taking soooo long.

I don't know why my three beautiful children have to stay in a boarding school and grow older every day without us.

I don't know why we have a court date that will most likely be changed and cause more delays.

I don't know why we have had money stolen away from the good things it was intended to do.

I don't know why we have been told soooo many lies.

I don't know why.

But what I do know... is that God is faithful.

I know that in the midst of this adoption taking so long, a desire in my heart has grown to help other older children find families and avoid the pain we have been through.

I know that even though my children are not with me, God takes care of them. He has proven this countless times.

I know that He is control of our court date.

I know that the money we have had stolen has made us determined to do the things God is calling us to do through our own project.

I know that through everything... God has turned evil intentions and brought about good.

I don't know why God thinks I can handle any of this... the adoption or this project. It is humbling... and scary... and exciting.

I do know that God is moving and directing and providing. I know that He will accomplish great things.

Sometimes I just need to write it down... to remember all that He has already done. So on the days where "I don't know" creeps up and trys to drag me down... I can look back and remember His faithfulness.

He IS good... and He loves me. This I know.

One Little Word

We received an e-mail stating we have a court date!

My heart nearly lept out of my chest when I opened that e-mail... until I continued to read and noticed... but.

I don't like that little word.

But... trampled all over my excitement.

We got another e-mail telling us that an application has been filed to have our case re-allocated to another judge. There were multiple reasons for this decision.

Oh... the highs and lows...

and oh... the difference one little word can make... but.

I like the word pray.

One little word that makes a huge impact. A powerful word.

It's an action word too... which means means it kicks but right out the door.

Pray.

What's Cookin'?

This summer I decided my girls needed to get busy cookin'. After all, they need to be prepared to feed their adoring husbands and many children!

They have always been helpful in the kitchen and they do know how to put a whole meal together, but I am usually in the kitchen working right along beside them.

For the past couple of weeks, they have done it ALL. Even the grocery shopping!

They are planning our meals...

and cooking.

Kat likes to follow directions...

while Lizard likes to get creative.

Lizard is our serious girl...

Kat is... not as serious.

Elizabeth, our creative and serious cook,

created this YUMMY potato dish.

She worried when Daddy "helped" melt the cheese!

They have BOTH done an excellent job!

My girls bless me tremendously!

Mosquito Net Project

After working outside with Daddy the other night, my youngest came in with mosquito bites ALL over her legs. We put some itching cream on them and she went off to bed.

Now... that isn't really a big deal in itself.  The "big deal" part is that I didn't have to worry that she might get sick with malaria from those bites.

In Uganda those mosquito bites would be deadly.  320 people die each day from malaria in Uganda. It is the leading cause of death in children under 5 years old.

Mosquito bites kill.

Malaria is treatable and preventable.  The problem is poverty. People don't have the money for the medication or for the mosquito nets.

Part of our plan through The Suubi Project is to show the love of Jesus to the villagers around our project in a practical way.

To SHOW His love we want to purchase 336 mosquito nets. That will provide each family in the village with two nets. It's a practical way of caring for the poor.

One net costs $10.00. Ten dollars. Ten!

The fact is mosquito nets prevent mosquito bites which prevent malaria which saves lives.

Ten Dollars = One Net = One Life.  That's a great investment!

Walking

Evening walks are magical.

We slow down...

and just enjoy being together.

We talk quietly and really listen...

while being the people God has created us to be.

There is such joy in the simplicity of it.

Walking.

When I think about walking with Jesus...

I think we make it complicated.

I think we over-anaylze it...

and set unrealistic expectations on ourselves.

Walking with Jesus...

is just walking.

It's putting one foot in front of the other...

slowing down to marvel at His beauty...

enjoying Him for who He is...

listening to His voice...

embracing the person He created us to be...

and celebrating with great joy His saving grace!

18 months...

It has been 18 months since I took my first step onto African soil and fell in love with a country and its people.

18 months since I first laid eyes on three beautiful children that I knew in an instant were mine. I felt it in my heart.

Most days I walk in the blessed assurance of God's unwavering love and perfect plan. But some days... it's hard.

Sometimes it feels like it's just a dream... or a wild idea.

I have visited "my" children four times since I first met them. Each time it was a direct result of their prayers for help. God answers prayers. Faithfully.

Each time I have visited them I have fallen more in love with them. Their pleas for me to bring them home are heartbreaking. They want to understand about judges and court dates and paperwork... but they don't. They just want to come home.

18 months...

I know of families that have waited much longer than this... and my heart goes out to them. My prayers go up for them.

And I ask that your prayers go up for us... for our children to come home.

The Book of Blessings

I love searching Scripture and finding verses for specific needs when I'm praying for family or friends. I also love adding verses when I send a card or e-mail that will comfort, encourage... or just BLESS!

That's why I am so excited to have found this book! It has hundreds of blessings, taken directly from Scripture, that have been divided into different categories. There is no word as powerful as the Word of God!

This book is a WONDERFUL resource!

A True Follower

Tonight after dinner, our youngest daughter, Abigail came to me and said quietly that she "needed to tell me something".

The last time she said those words was when she had to confess that she and her friend had taken one of her classmates shoes at school and he had become so upset that he pinched her. Hard.

She had been at the dance studio all day for the Dance Intensive, so I wasn't certain what she possibly had to confess.

A few minutes later I was sitting in my bedroom, watching the expression of pure joy light up her face, as she proclaimed, "Today, I became a true follower of Christ!"

Now, several years ago Abigial told us that she wanted to ask Jesus into her heart. She has been reading her bible and praying every night. But, tonight it was "true". Today, she truly got it.

She told me that during the morning worship session as she was watching a precious friend of ours worship that something in her heart "snapped" and that she just started "dancing and dancing to worship Jesus".

At the end of their worship time the teacher told them to go to a quiet place and spend time with Jesus.

Abigial said that as she was sitting quietly "thinking about Jesus" she had a vision. She said, "There were two paths in front of me and as I stepped onto the right path a piece of paper was laid in front of me with all the bad stuff that I have ever done on it". She said, "Then a man came and took the paper from me and wadded it up and threw it away". "He gave me a new piece of paper that was bright and clean and glorious"!

She was so excited! And so full of joy!

She continued, "Then I saw a huge pond. I was on one side and Jesus was on the other side. He was very far away." She said, "I knew that I had been trying my whole life to get to His side, but I couldn't do it by myself." "But today, Jesus made a bridge across it and told me to come and follow Him. So, I took a step. And today I became a true follower of Christ!" She exclaimed, "It was glorious!"

Then she showed me her journal where she had written down what she had experienced.

She wrote, "Today, the Lord has changed my heart. Something snapped. I have been changed... I have become a follower of Jesus."

Oh. My. Goodness.

Today, my baby girl made the decision to become a true follower of Christ!!!

There is no greater joy than to know that my children are walking with Jesus!!!

Hallelujah!!! PRAISE THE LORD!!!

Tradition

Every year... for as long as I can remember...

my dearest friend, Tina,

has made my birthday something extra special.

We go to her house to play in her pool...

and eat yummy goodness.

My children ADORE her.

Elizabeth shares her name...

because Tina is just that special to me.

She truly loves me... at all times.

I am so blessed that she is in my life...

and I just love our birthday tradition.

We have no court date.

The judge our application went to has a broken arm and is not at his station.

Our attorney is out of the country.

Court closes in the middle of July.

Seriously?!

I mean really?!

We need some serious intervention here.

We NEED God to move on our behalf!

PLEASE pray with us...

The ONLY way we are going to be able to bring these precious children home is by the hand of God.

His hand moves... WHEN His people PRAY!

I'm thinking... it's time for some "storming the gates of Heaven" prayer!

Please PRAY with us to get these children home!

RADICAL

I listened to the "Radical" series (posted to the right) several months ago and was convicted and challenged in so many ways. I wanted EVERYone I knew to listen to it! It is that good. It is a message that needs to be heard.

It is a message that should cause us, as believers, to really examine our lives and consider if we are living according to Scripture.

Well now... there's a book! You know how I love books.

But what I love more... is this message. David Platt, is not afraid to preach a message that believers may find difficult to hear. Many will be uncomfortable with what he is preaching. He "challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences."

It's good stuff. It's necessary. It's time for Christ followers to actually live according to how Jesus called us to live.

Comparison: an examination of two or more items to establish similarities and dissimilarities.

I don't know of anyone that does not compare. Whether it be houses or cars or people or whatever.

The trouble with comparison begins when we compare our walk with the Lord to others. When we compare our ministry to others. We can easily become discouraged with ourselves when we make comparisons because we may believe that others are "doing better" or "doing more".

This happens because we become focused on those around us. We take our eyes off Jesus.

When my children were little, I would tell them while we were out shopping that they needed to watch me closely so that they would know where I was going. I told them they must follow me. I wanted to teach them to stay focused on who they were following and not to become distracted or they might get lost.

I need to remember that lesson!

We must remember that God has made each one of us for a unique and special purpose. We must learn to listen and focus on what His will is for our lives. We must follow Him.

We must be careful that we don't compare our ministry to somebody else's ministry... that we don't compare our walk with Jesus with somebody else's walk. We can be encouraged by others. We can be motivated. And we definitely want to support and pray for others.

There are so many amazing people in this world (and we read about a LOT of them here in blog-land) that are doing some pretty awesome ministry! We must beware of being so focused on what someone else is doing that we lose sight of Jesus and His purpose for our lives.

When we are focused on Jesus and faithfully serving where God has called us to serve and minister... when we keep our eyes on Him... then He can do great things through each one of us.

Great things does not mean big things.

In John 21, Jesus kept asking Peter "Do you truly love me?" Peter got his feelings hurt (understandably, I think). Then it reads as if Jesus took him on a walk to talk about it. As they were walking, Peter noticed John following them and he asked Jesus, "What about him?"

Jesus replies, "...what is that to you? You must follow Me."

Here is a guy out on a walk with Jesus, he becomes distracted by someone else and what they're up to, comparing himself with someone else. Jesus says to him "what is that to you?" In other words, "Dude, focus! Keep your eyes on Me."

If Peter, walking with Jesus, can become distracted by what is going on with someone else... then I am pretty sure that is going to happen to me! But my sweet Savior will walk with me and encourage me to focus on Him.

He commands each one of us... "You must follow Me."

Are you focused on Him? Are you faithfully following Him? Or are you watching someone else and comparing what your doing with them?

Jesus has a special and unique plan for your life!

Follow Him!
